Frequently Asked Questions About Gym Straps & Lifting Straps
Q1. What are lifting straps and when should I use them?
A1. Lifting straps are straps that wrap around your wrists and the barbell (or dumbbell) to supplement your grip strength during heavy pulls. They are most useful for deadlifts, rows, lat pulldowns, and rack pulls where grip fatigue limits performance before the target muscle group is fully trained. They are not recommended for Olympic lifts (clean and jerk, snatch) where a quick release is required.
Q2. What is the difference between regular lifting straps and figure 8 straps?
A2.Regular lifting straps (loop-style) wrap around the bar and can be quickly released if needed. Figure 8 straps lock the bar to your wrists more securely — ideal for maximum deadlift attempts where grip must be completely eliminated as a limiting factor. Figure 8 straps cannot be released quickly, so they should only be used on straight barbell deadlifts and rack pulls.
Q3. Do lifting straps affect deadlift performance?
A3. Yes. Lifting straps eliminate grip as a performance limiter on heavy deadlifts, allowing you to fully stress the target muscle groups (hamstrings, glutes, erectors) without the set ending due to grip fatigue. Research consistently shows lifters can deadlift significantly more weight with straps than without — making them a valuable training tool for building strength.
Q4. What material are Hack Athletics lifting straps made from?
A4. The standard Hack Athletics lifting straps are made from heavy-duty cotton with 5mm neoprene padding at the wrist contact point for comfort during extended use. The cotton provides durability and grip texture without cutting into the wrists under heavy loads.
Q5. Are lifting straps one size fits all?
A5. Hack Athletics 24-inch lifting straps accommodate most wrist sizes for adults — both men and women. The wrap-around design allows you to adjust the tightness around the bar and wrist for a secure fit regardless of wrist circumference.
Q6. When should I NOT use lifting straps?
A6. Avoid lifting straps when training for grip strength specifically, during Olympic lifts (snatch, clean) where quick release is necessary, during competition (most federations prohibit straps in competition), and on exercises where developing natural grip is part of the training goal (e.g., farmer's walks for grip development).
Q7. What is the warranty on Hack Athletics lifting straps?
A7. Hack Athletics lifting straps are covered by our standard 30-day satisfaction policy. If you experience a manufacturing defect (stitching failure, material tear) within 30 days of purchase, contact us at hello@hack-enterprises.com with your order number and photos of the defect for a replacement or refund.
